VOA Words and their stories





[Summary]

There are many nicknames in USA. For example, Tennessee is called "Volunteer State", because of the bravery of its citizens. Texas is called the "Lone Star State". It gets its nickname from the single star on its flag. In addition, there are "Cowboy State" "Buckeye State" and "Sooner State".


The United States of America consists of 48 states of the mainland and Alaska and Hawaiian two states, capital Washington D.C. of the federal direct control. Furthermore, an overseas territory includes Puerto Rico, U.S.A. territory Samoa, Guam, American Virgin Islands.


Japan has nicknames too. For example, Kagawa prefecture is called "Udon prefecture". Nickname changes an impression. If there are many nicknames in Japan, Japan will become more lively.
